The Dorsal Fin version 1 in smooth Kuro-tamenuri finish exemplifies the sleek minimalism of Nakaya style – form and function are harmoniously united, with the raised fin on the cap providing a distinctive aesthetic feature as well as serving as a built-in roll-stopper.

Multiple layers of urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the raised fin – this is one of the most time-intensive procedures utilized by Nakaya. Even the ebonite hard rubber used for the pen body is a natural product, sustainably harvested from the rubber gum tree.

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Dorsal Fin is also a terrific everyday writer. As with all Nakaya pens, the balance is superb.

Dark red highlights show through at the barrel and cap edges and along the top of the fin. Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
